Heartworm Prevention Policy
July 21, 2022
In the best interest of our patients, moving forward Primary Pet Care will follow the guidelines laid out by the American Heartworm Society (AHS) and American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) in regards to heartworm medication protocol:
- If a pet is 2 months without heartworm prevention in medical record, a heartworm test is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED before restarting the medication. A recheck test recommended 6 months later.
- If a pet is 3 months or more without prevention in medical record, a heartworm is REQUIRED. A recheck test recommended 6 months later.
The aforementioned standard of care is outlined by the organization who dedicates their research to this specific area of pet health. The lifecycle of deadly parasite, heartworm, has many phases which makes timeliness and compliance very important.
We team with the makers of heartworm prevention to get you the best rebates available to help counter the cost of the medications.
